What is Biohacking?

For many of us, this word is not a familiar one. However, if you had Red Light or PEMF therapy at Luminous, you can consider yourself a biohacker!

“Bio” is a prefix derived from the Greek word “bios,” meaning life. It is commonly used in words related to life, living organisms, or biological processes, such as “biology”.

“Hacking” originally referred to the process of gaining unauthorized access to computer systems, but its meaning has evolved. In a broader sense, “hacking” now refers to the creative, often unconventional problem solving or optimization of systems.

Biohacking means applying similar principles to biology or personal health. Biohackers use science and technology to alter their bodies, diets, and environments to optimize performance, health, and well-being.

By gaining greater control over our biology, we can aim to achieve peak performance, optimal health and potentially extend our lifespan. This can be done using technology, through diet changes, or through powerful habits, routines and exercises. Does this sound like you?

What are common Biohacking practices?

Biohacking can range from simple lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise optimization, to more advanced techniques. Popular examples of biohacking today include:

  1. Intermittent Fasting: A practice where eating periods are limited, which can promote fat loss, improve metabolism, and potentially extend lifespan.
  2. Wearable Technology: Devices like fitness trackers and smartwatches monitor vital signs, sleep patterns, and activity levels for optimized health and performance.
  3. Cold Exposure and Cryo Therapy: Techniques like ice baths and cold showers to boost circulation, improve mood, and enhance immune function.
  4. Nootropics: Supplements or drugs that enhance cognitive function, memory, creativity, or motivation.
  5. Practicing Gratitude: It’s very difficult to feel sad, angry or depressed when you’re thinking about the things you’re grateful for.
  6. Meditation and Positive Affirmations
  7. Music/Sound Therapy: using various sounds such as music, binaural beats, and singing bowls to induce relaxation, reduce stress, and promote healing.
  8. Photobiomodulation also known as Red Light Therapy
  9. PEMF – Pulsed Electro Magnetic Field Therapy.

Most of the practices have been around long before they were known as “biohacking”. They are anti-aging and simply good for your health!
