 What is PEMF therapy?

PEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy. It is a non-invasive medical treatment that delivers low frequency electromagnetic waves to the body which help stimulate cells and promote healing. It is a safe and effective way to improve the health of your cells in the body. PEMF can reduce inflammation in the body, enhance cellular health and metabolism, and improve circulation.

What conditions does it help?

PEMF can reduce recovery time, increase energy, improve athletic performance and it used for a variety of health conditions including:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Chronic pain
  • Sports Injuries
  • Arthritis
  • Concussions
  • Sleep disorders
  • Depression
  • Autism
  • Dementia
  • Nerve damage
  • and much more.

How does PEMF therapy work?

As you know, food, water, sunlight, and oxygen are required for life, but there is another element of health that is often overlooked- the earth’s magnetic field and its corresponding PEMFs (pulsed electromagnetic fields). These frequencies are necessary for our body’s energy production and other functions. Due to our current ways of life, we are no longer getting these life-nurturing energies of the earth the way we should be.

PEMF technology intends to mimic these magnetic fields to give our bodies what they need for optimal cellular function.

PEMF therapy works by directing small amounts of energy toward a specific part of your body via a specialized magnetic device. At Luminous, we use a Swiss Bionic Omnium1 PEMF Mat to lie on for a whole body treatment and we also have smaller devices that are used for specific areas such as your back or shoulders.

Our bodies use electromagnetic signals to function so if we give our cells the right electrical charge, the body instinctively knows what to do and can repair itself in times of illness or injury.

PEMF therapy helps regenerate damaged or injured cells, increases microcirculation and supports the energy factories within your cells (mitochondria) to re-energize and give your body what it needs to heal on a cellular level.

Simply put, it’s like giving your body a much-needed power-up. By harnessing the power of electromagnetic energy, PEMF therapy penetrates deep into your cells, reducing inflammation, and boosting your body’s natural healing abilities.

After just one session of PEMF therapy, the cells in your body will be less clumped together, focusing on separating each cell so that it can promote more circulation and blood flow throughout the body. No wonder this is one of the top choices for athletes to use for recovery!

PEMF is very helpful for people suffering from:

  • Physical injuries & ailments
  • Chronic illnesses
  • Mental health disorders.

Wherever the body shows inflammation, PEMF is there to help lessen the damage and create more charged-up healthy cells in your body.

Similar to going to the gym, PEMF therapy has an accumulative effect so the more you do it, the more lasting sustained changes take place. Each person is different and unique, and so are the effects of PEMF therapy for each person.

One of the biggest takeaways with PEMF therapy is the amount of people who notice a difference in their sleep and how much more deeply they stay asleep.

Athletes notice the quick recovery and lessened effects of DOMS (delayed on-set muscle syndrome). This helps the athletic person get back into training without too much recovery time!

PEMF at low doses is much different from the EMF’s from electronic devices that may actually cause harm to your body. PEMF doses closely mimic what you would get in nature. They are scientifically designed to give your mitochondria a slight “charge” to enable more energy to be created and to boost your body’s natural healing process.

PEMF therapy is safe for everyone except for those who are pregnant, have a pacemaker, or are epileptic.

We offer complimentary Brown’s Gas therapy (using our AquaCure system) with each PEMF session.

How is the Swiss Bionic Omnium1 PEMF Mat different from others?

This technology uses the scientifically proven most effective triple-wave sawtooth pulse while most other PEMF mats use a simplistic repeating sine and squarewave signal. The Onmi1 has built in pauses and complexity to prevent habituation. The sawtooth displays continuous change, thus obtaining constant induction (without zero phases).

How is PEMF different from Photobiomodulation (PBM)?

PBM is also a form of energy medicine but uses wavelengths in the visible light spectrum between 380nm and 750nm.and in the non-visible spectrum of Near infrared light between 750 and 1200nm.

PEMF technology generally uses electrical fields from 1-100Hz (low frequency).

Both therapies work at the cellular level but in different ways.

Different wavelengths, or frequencies, of electromagnetic radiation affect the cells of the body in different ways. Ionizing radiation has a very high frequency, whereas safe, non-ionizing radiation has a low frequency. PEMF therapy generates EMFs at a very low frequency. Most PEMF therapy devices operate at a frequency between 1 and 100 Hz.

The Electromagnetic Spectrum

Electromagnetic Spectrum

PBM devices use wavelengths in the range of 400 – 1200 nanometres (nm). This includes the visible light spectrum and near – infrared wavelengths (non -visible).

Mitochondria and Cellular Energy (ATP)

Every cell in your body contains organelles known as mitochondria, which are responsible for generating the energy the cell needs to perform its basic functions and to repair itself, eliminate wastes, and to create new cells.

PEMF:  These mitochondria need nutrients to perform their functions, and when you expose your cells to electromagnetic fields, you increase the movement of nutrients, ions, and other helpful components into the cell, thereby boosting the ability of each mitochondrion to do its job.

PBM: Essential to the mitochondria is access to oxygen. When cells are damaged due to illness or injury, nitric oxide builds up in the cell and competes for oxygen. Oxidative Stress develops and the cell eventually dies.

PBM Light photons directed at these damaged cells can reverse this process.

Light photons from PBM penetrate tissue and act on a photoreceptor in the mitochondria of your cell called “cytochrome c oxidase”. This is an enzyme that catalyzes the final step in ATP production.

In a healthy cell, cytochrome c oxidase combines oxygen with NADH (a crucial coenzyme in the making of ATP) to make the hydrogen ions that drive ATP (energy) production.

In a damaged cell, the mitochondria start making Nitric Oxide which competes with oxygen and binds with cytochrome c oxidase stopping the production of ATP.

PBM light photons break the bond between nitric oxide and cytochrome c oxidase. This process also displaces the oxidative stress. This allows oxygen to reach the mitochondria and restores cellular health.

The healthier your mitochondria, the healthier your tissues, and your whole body.
