Photobiomodulation (PBM) for Concussions:
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells.
Medical providers may describe a concussion as a “mild” brain injury because concussions are usually not life-threatening. Even so, the effects of a concussion can be very serious and long lasting.
Concussion symptoms may include:
- Headache or a feeling of pressure in the head
- Confusion or feeling as if in a fog
- Dizziness or “seeing stars”
- Lack of orientation
- Reduced coordination
- Slower reading
- Ringing in the ears
- Nausea
- Slurred speech
- Delayed response to questions
- Fatigue, lack of energy
- Concentration and memory complaints
- Irritability and other personality changes
- Sensitivity to light and noise
- Sleep disturbances
- Psychological adjustment problems and depression
- Mood changes
- Disorders of taste and smell.
The standard concussion treatment consists of rest, change of lifestyle and medications (which often have unwanted side effects). Many people continue to experience symptoms which can greatly impact their quality of life. Ongoing symptoms often lead to depression and studies are showing that concussions can increase our risk of developing brain diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
NEW TREATMENT – NEW HOPE!
Photobiomodulation (PBM) Light Therapy for the Brain
PBM Light therapy has enormous potential to treat challenging brain conditions like TBI.
PBM is a natural, painless, non-invasive treatment that has been scientifically proven to help restore and improve cell function in the brain and body, stimulating the healing process and recovery.
Photobiomodulation (PBM) employs red or near-infrared (NIR) light (600-1100nm) to the head.
The light reacts with the mitochondria of damaged brain cells to stimulate healing in various ways:
- Increase mitochondrial function (increases ATP energy production to optimal levels)
- Improve regional cerebral blood flow and tissue oxygenation
- Reduce inflammation and swelling
- Increase antioxidants
- Protect against apoptosis (cell death).
These mechanisms result in a general decrease and/or elimination of symptoms.
Clinical Findings
Clinical studies using PBM have been conducted in patients suffering from the chronic effects of TBI. The results showed significant improvements in executive function, working memory, and improved sleep. Functional MRI’s showed modulation of activation in intrinsic brain networks likely to be damaged in TBI.
“All these mechanisms of action strongly suggest that PBM delivered to the head should be beneficial in cases of both acute and chronic TBI. Near infrared light can penetrate quite deep into the body. So if you shine it on your head, it goes through your skull and quite a lot of it is absorbed by your brain. Once you understand this, it’s amazing to think of the various diseases of the brain that need regeneration and healing, which could potentially be treated with light therapy.” Dr. Michael Hamblin, PhD. Harvard Medical School.
Treating TBI at Luminous Health Solutions
Photobiomodulation (PBM) using medical grade red and near infrared (NIR) laser & LED light, can repair damaged cells and stimulate healing. If you have recently been concussed, or are still suffering due to past concussions, PBM Light Therapy has the potential to greatly reduce and eliminate your symptoms.
Our clients at Luminous have reported:
- Increased physical and cognitive energy
- Improved mental sharpness, memory, innovative thinking, reading and learning
- Improved goal setting and completion of tasks
- Improved ability to focus attention and coordinate sequences of actions
- Greater ability to emotionally self-regulate and control impulses
- Improved sleep, less anxiety, and much better moods.
Client Testimonials:
“We flew in from Regina to Vancouver after learning about PBM using THOR hand-held devices along with the ARRC bed and how it could help eliminate the debilitating effects of the multiple concussions my son had received. He had five treatment sessions with both the lightbed and THOR targeted lights over a week at Luminous and there was an incredible improvement in cognitive function, energy and mood. We are so grateful for this amazing therapy! Thank you Paul & Heather at Luminous!” Kathy M.
“Two words…. LIFE SAVING! I came in as a patient with major concussion symptoms. I came out a very happy man with ZERO concussion symptoms. I no longer experience headaches from sunlight, my memory is back to normal and actually better than it was before. I can sleep very easily now and I’ve become way less irritable than ever before. From the very beginning Paul was very open and very good at explaining to me how the PBM laser works. It’s non evasive and you don’t feel a thing during treatment. The result: get rid of your health issues! Thank you so much Paul! I can now live my life symptom free and believe me, I’m much happier without them!” Mike H.
“Light therapy at Luminous Health Solutions healed me from a very serious concussion. Paul and Heather are extremely caring people and dedicated healers. I am endlessly grateful to have found this clinic and highly recommend this treatment.” L. Hall
